The new Apple TV 2G was successfully jailbroken using the SHAtter exploit. The process of "jailbreaking" involves gaining full access to the device that allows developers to add new functionality to the iDevice. The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad have all been successfully jailbroken over time and has allowed individuals to install 3rd party apps to their iDevices.

Despite all this, you still can't install 3rd party apps on the Apple TV. Apple is also likely to be launching an official App Store for the Apple TV, but they are yet to announce any official plans.

A few days ago, he also tweeted to remind users that “Those interested in *potential* AppleTV JBs, better to buy early!”. So if you are planning to buy an Apple TV, buy it soon.
