A lot of people are getting the iTunes error 1013 during the iOS 4.2 update leaving iPhone stuck in recovery mode. This error is more likely if your iPhone 4 was previously jailbroken. Below is a tutorial to solve this problem and exit recovery mode.

Before doing that here are a few tips for an error free update/restore :

* Quit any other application using iPhone (such as iPhoto).
* Always use genuine .IPSWs from Apple’s direct download links.
* Update iTunes to the latest version available.

This tutorial also works if your iPhone was stuck in recovery mode after a failed jailbreak attempt using limera1n or greenpois0n leaving iPhone in recovery mode.

Fix iTunes Error 1013 On iPhone 4 [How To] :

1) Download Tiny Umbrella from here.

2) Connect iPhone with USB cable.

3) Click on Kick/Exit Recovery.

If the above method does not work for you, try this :

1) On your Mac, go to “Applications” folder.
2) Now navigate to the “Utilities” folder.
3) Launch "Terminal".
4) Type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" and hit return.
5) Enter your password.
6) Use the down arrow key to find the “gs.apple.com” entries. Once the cursor is in front, make sure you comment out the line(s) by entering “#” in front of the text.
7) Save the file by pressing CONTROL+O.
8) Exit the nano editor by pressing CONTROL+X.
9) Restore your iDevice.

Your iPhone should now restart normally and appear in iTunes like before with all your data and playlists along with iOS 4.2 update.
