Earlier if you didn’t had the supported SIM card to activate your iPhone with iTunes, you could use the Phonebook SIM card for activation. But Apple fixed it by hooking the activation wildcard ticket to the ICCID of the used sim. After this first hurdle, the hacker devised another way to use the same Phonebook SIM card trick on jailbroken iDevices, but Apple has also fixed that bug too.

Fortunately the new jailbreak tools - Greenpois0n, Limera1n, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze which are based on Geohot’s Limera1n exploit not only jailbreaks the iPhone but also hacktivates it.

If you are not on an official carrier or you don’t have the supported SIM card, don't purchase a Phonebook    SIM card as it won't work anymore.
